I think most of the world's biggest problems have already been solved. It's just that people don't listen to the solution unless it's easy or convenient or profitable. We could have been off oil in the seventies. Or the eighties or the nineties. But some old white men in a boardroom decided that their bottom line was more important than our general well being.
Of course many things that make absolutely no sense persist in the name of profit. Cents will always trump sense. I wasn't surprised to hear on Saturday that this "Top Kill" method failed to contain the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. People who operate purely in the name of profit don't consider safety and don't have any viable contingency plan. The very act of drilling for oil is environmentally irresponsible. Oil is the single greatest threat to our economy, our environment, and our security. Yet we insist on indulging our dangerous addiction instead of pursuing alternative forms of energy, most of which have not only been available but viable for decades.
I think it's ironic that there's a movement in this country to shrink the government and limit it's power. Clearly the government doesn't have much power to begin with. Weakening of federal regulations is the job of lobbyists, but they take it one step further and actually draft legislation and hand feed it right to Congress. And the end result is loose or non-enforcement of what little regulations that actually survive. And yes let me be clear, I'm blaming BUSH for this oil spill.
There's this show on TV about people who hoard huge amounts of crap in their house to the point where the whole house is just a huge pile of shit and they have to bring in professionals to dig through all the crap. Sometimes it gets straight up nasty, with firearms, drugs, decaying animals, and stuff that has chemically transformed into biotoxins. They bring in professionals, to try and clean up the mess. But the people hang around the house and cry and fight and try to justify keeping their moldy teddy bear collections. They fight the professionals every step of the way and sometimes at the end of the episode the house still isn't clean. They open up a closet and an avalanche of tiny porcelain Jesus dolls pours out.
That's what's happened to our government. It's just full of so much shit, that true reformers (don't laugh there are a few of them) have no idea where to start. They concentrate on one area, and a crisis emerges somewhere else. Try to handle healthcare, immigration flares up, try to handle financial reform, terrorism and the environment blow up. And people have a right to be mad, but they're mad for the wrong reasons. The real reason to be mad is that all of these problems have been ignored for at least a decade. And in the case of Oil several decades.
But let's be real any attempt at reform, or resolution will be superficial at best. Because Republican or Democrat these fucks need to get reelected and let's be clear even Obama gets checks from those old white men in the boardroom.
