Busta Rhymes, Back On My B.S., (Flipmode/Universal Motown, 2009)
Well, it’s only been delayed for a year and a half, due to Busta’s propensity to shovel steroids into his body then attack Jimmy Iovine. Good work Bus! Now on Universal Motown, he finally drops Back On My Bullshit, minus Dr Dre. Does the elder statesman of rap still have it in him? (nullus) Read on…
WHEEL OF FORTUNE
Not a bad start for the album, with a killer beat from DJ Scratch. Incidentally, the I Bullshit You Not mixtape (entirely produced by Scratch) is flames.
GIVE EM WHAT THEY ASKIN FOR
Is this what they’re asking for? I tell you what I’m asking for, more tracks like Don’t Touch Me. Doesn’t seem to have made the cut, probably due to Interscope-related f*ckery.
RESPECT MY CONGLOMERATE
I didn’t like this when it first leaked and I still don’t. Features phone-in performances from Weezy and Jada (aka Gremlin and Turtle).
SHOOT FOR THE MOON
Sounds like any number of other Busta tracks, but it does the trick. At least there’s no autotune on this one.
HUSTLER’S ANTHEM ‘09
And here comes the king of autotune, T-Pain. One of his less annoying guest appearances. I’m still bumping I’m On A Boat.
The obligatory Neptunes cut. Busta airs out his cod-Jamaican accent. It’s no Pass the Courvoisier. But what is?
The ‘racist’ single. Ron Browz really needs to go play in some traffic.
IMMA GO & GET MY…
WE WANT IN
A slightly less obnoxious appearance from Ether Boy.
WE MISS YOU
Autotune overload. Make ‘em stop!
An utter sh*t-sandwich.
DON’T BELIEVE EM
Beat is nails, but the presence of Akon (as always) brings the quality level down a few notches.
Busta never sounds particularly convincing on his more reflective tracks, but this tune is still quite convincing. Common shows up and bores everybody half to death towards the end.
WORLD GO ROUND
What hip-hop sounds like when the influence of European homosexuals is felt (nullus). Reminds me a bit of New Order’s Blue Monday, but with rapping. And that’s not a good thing.
WE MADE IT
The Linkin Park collabo tagged on at the end as a ‘bonus’. And here I was thinking that the word bonus had positive connotations.
COMMENTS: Like most Busta albums this sh*t is patchy as hell. Plus it’s missing I Got Bass and Don’t Touch Me, which would have been the two stand-out tracks here. I can’t help wondering what other tracks got lost in the Interscope shuffle. That being said, Busta’s delivery is as good as ever and so even the weaker tracks still have some potential. My advice would be to leave the auto-tune at home and have more involvement from DJ Scratch.
BEST TRACKS: Wheel of Fortune, Hustler’s Anthem ’09, Kill Dem.
