Of course they didn't have the balls to put comedy's golden boy Dane Cook anywhere on the list. And Carlos Mencia himself barely made the list, coming in at number 12. That said, most of the top 10 are people who don't really do stand-up like that or people who haven't been active for some time.
So Carlos Mencia is essentially the worst stand-up comic around these days. Or is it Dane Cook, who's emerged fairly recently as the worst thing that ever happened to comedy? Below I compare the two on all of the points that matter and come up with a definitive answer.
If the two comics have one thing in common, it's that they're both desperately unfunny. It's not uncommon to watch a TV special by either of them and hardly laugh once. Also, they both have a tendency to rely on stale formulas like race humor and bodily function humor.
Which one is worse? I'd have to roll with Carlos Mencia. Dane Cook doesn't seem to care as much whether you laugh one way or the other. Mencia, meanwhile, will seemingly do anything (short of actually coming up with a novel comedy routine) for a laugh.
Is either one of these 'bags genuinely racist? Who knows. There was a bit in Dane Cook's recent HBO special Vicious Circle about black people's behavior in movie theaters that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. More so than just being an unsuccessful attempt at shitty race humor, it struck me as a purposeful attempt to see if he could slip a little racism into his routine and get away with it.
That said, there's a certain value in being able to offend people. Carlos Mencia, meanwhile, has somehow managed to take all of the fun out of race humor.
CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
Carlos Mencia's Mind of Mencia and Dane Cook's Vicious Circle are both awful, awful TV programs, but which one is worse? The Dane Cook is easily the least funny of the two, but Carlos Mencia might be more painful to watch because of his constant cooning. Between the two, I'd have to roll with Mind of Mencia though, just because it's over an hour shorter.
CONCLUSION: Carlos Mencia > Dane Cook
