Don't tell me Prince is an ex-gay homophobe

I thought the whole point of Prince was that he was a straight guy who would occasionally act like a fudge just to piss people off.

I remember reading that, early on in his career, he would open for the Rolling Stones wearing nothing but his undies, as if he was that fruit from Of Montreal (never look at the Jumbotron during an Of Montreal concert), and people would get all pissed and start throwing things at him.

I know there's that line in "Controversy" that goes, "Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay?" And I do seem to recall him doing that thing where he'd pretend to kiss one of the other guys in his group, though I can't remember any instance in particular.

But for what it's worth, Prince also once had a song about banging his sister, and I'm assuming (praying, actually) he didn't go there. And remember when Kurt Cobain used to kiss Krist Novoselic? I guess that makes him a fudge now, too? (I could see if it was Busta Rhymes...)

jimbrah izrael, in a post on his blog over at The Root,  suggests that Prince may have been a fudge all along, and now he might be one of these ex teh ghey types who live to throw their fellow fruits under a bus.

Say it ain't so!

In a story in this week's New Yorker about Prince's new crib out in LA (the fuck?), it sounds like Prince might be espousing the Fred Phelps point of view when it comes to teh homosexuality.

And I quote:

When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’ ”

This story took place "just before" the election, out in California where Prop 8 was a major issue, and you know how fruits out there are up in arms now that Prop 8 passed. Does this mean the teh ghey community is about to turn on Prince? Is Prince really that big amongst fruits anyway?

jimbrah izrael links to a teh ghey guy talking about how Prince inspired him to be more of a fudge or whatever, but I wasn't really sure what to make of it. It sounded like it may have just been a matter of Prince dressing like a fruit, and this guy copying some of his wardrobe.

Also, I'm not sure if I'm buying jimbrah izrael's suggestion that Prince might be a closet case. You would think that, with as much that has been written about Prince over the years, we would know if he's taken it up the coat.

True story: If I had a dollar for every time someone emailed me wanting to know if jimbrah izrael is a closet case, I'd have $3. My response is always that, while he might openly admit to wearing a skirt (my bad, a sarong), if he claims to be a straight, I'm willing to believe he's a straight.
