Ghetto areas shouldn't be allowed to ban fast food restaurants

According to Last Week's Poll
The topic of last week's poll was ripped from the headlines, as if it was a very special episode of Diff'rent Strokes.

I read in the paper a couple of weeks ago that there's a certain area of Los Angeles where they're not gonna allow any more new fast food restaurants to be built for at least two years, and possibly evar.

The idea is supposedly that this is gonna free up real estate to open up sit down restaurants and grocery stores, which is gonna help fight the obesity epidemic in ghetto areas. Because of course you can't but anything unhealthy in a sit down restaurant or a grocery store.

Last week's poll had to do with whether or not ghetto areas should be allowed to ban fast food restaurants. Check the results.

Should ghetto areas be allowed to ban fast food restaurants?

  1. No (51.4%)
  2. Yes (48.6%)

Total Votes: 276

It's been ages since I've seen this site's readership so split. I wonder what's the rationale for voters on either side of this issue.

I voted yes myself, but I'm not gonna lie - I didn't spend that much time thinking about it. I just figured I didn't like the idea that a neighborhood shouldn't be allowed to ban a certain type of business, if that's what they want to do.

But then I got to thinking: What if a bunch of Muslims moved into an area and tried to ban a store that sells pr0nography? That just wouldn't be American. And yet, didn't I just suggest that communities ought to be able to ban certain types of businesses, if they want?

So you see, I'm having a hard time reconciling the part of me that feels like people should basically be free to do what they want, with the part of me that loves nothing more than to disrupt the business community.

Having thought about it a bit more, I'm still leaning towards the latter, though I'd be interested in hearing contrary arguments.

Next week's poll, which I created just now for your voting pleasure (nullus), has to do with who made the best album, Jay-Z or that bloke from Oasis. Vote early and vote often.
