Santogold - Santogold: Album Review

Santogold

Santogold, Santogold (Downtown Records, 2008)
Santogold wrote some songs for the R&B artist Res a few years back. Now, I guess she's trying to refashion herself as a sort of MIA-esque hipster rapper. As Noz the Cracker pointed out the other day, she's on the bill at this year's Rock the Bells. So, um, there.

The gulliest seven year-old of all time

via I Fux and the bums over at Alumnah.

Ladies and gentlemen, Jeremiah Wright

Ladies and gentlemen, Jeremiah Wright

I had to stop following the primaries back when Obama failed to lock shit up conclusively several weeks ago, despite the fact that he'd won more votes and something like twice as many states as Hillary. There was a long gap between primary elections in important states, and none of the controversies the media managed to come up were really that interesting.

The last one I really got into was a couple of months ago, when Fox News got their hands on some footage of Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright talking all kinds of shit about 9/11, and how the government invented AIDS and what have you. Then Obama had to remind people that he speaks so well, and I figured that might all be over and done with.

Clearly, I was mistaken. Obama and Jeremiah Wright have apparently had some sort of falling out due to the way Obama threw him under a bus. Which I'd say he definitely did, even though I know - back when I raised this issue at XXL a few weeks ago - people said he didn't, because he said couldn't sever ties with Jeremiah Wright any more than he could with his racist-ass grandma.

Jeremiah Wright must not have liked being compared to somebody's racist-ass grandma.

This weekend, he apparently went on some sort of PR offensive, in which he gave interviews and delivered speeches further explaining his wacky-ass views, as if that's gonna help matters, and basically suggesting that Obama is full of shit - that the senator threw him under a bus to appease white voters. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he's purposely trying to undermine Obama, but it looks like his pride has been wounded, so now he's just  lashing out for anyone who'll listen.

CNN yesterday had some highlights of a speech he gave this weekend, and I'd say it's easily some of the most ridiculous shit I've seen before in my life. If you've seen that HBO movie where Ving Rhames plays Don King, I'd compare it to that - except worse, because it's real. If this is the kind of shit he does in his church, never mind his Ward Churchill-esque views on politics, I might seriously have to stop by the next time I'm in the Chi.

Check the video after the jump.

Bud Light is dangerously close to water

Bol Light

According to Last Week's Poll
The other day, mofos got all asshurt when I mentioned - in a post about things I might have to cop with my $600 economic stimulus - that I was thinking about picking up a case of Bud Light.

People acted like I said I was going to a Jill Scott concert or some shit. It was insane.

I guess I probably could've opted for something a bit more classy than Bud Light, but the truth of the matter is that I like light beer. Call me crazy.

Last week's poll had to do with whether or not Bud Light is the sweet taste of freedom. Here are the results.

American beer, like Bud Light?

  1. Dangerously close to water (191 votes)
  2. The sweet taste of freedom (80 votes)

Really? Wow. I honestly expected the results of this one to be basically the opposite. I suppose I should have known better on a site where people have been known to front on Jessica Biel.

What can I say, other than I'm shocked that this site is apparently read by such fruits.

FHM's Sexiest Women in the World

FHM

FHM magazine just released its annual list of the 100 sexiest women in the world, and I have to say, it's not that bad.

Their top 10 differs quite a bit from Martin Luther King, Jr's 10 favorite white girls, if he were alive today, but it looks like all of the girls who made his list show up on the FHM list at some point or another. For example, only Jessica Biel and Scarlett Johansson from MLK's list made the top 10 of FHM's list, but I see my girl Dr. King's girl Anne Hathaway is down at 51.

And yeah, in case you were wondering, Maggie Gyllenhaal did make the FHM list. The reason I know this is because my new boss over at the plantation made it a note to point that out in his post today about his issues with the ethnic makeup of the list, i.e. its lack of black chicks. Only four of them - Rihanna (14), Beyonce (22), Selita Ebanks (27), and Halle Berry (33) - made this year's list.

The point he was trying to make was that how can only four black chicks be on this list, when they let white chicks Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ellen Page from Juno on the list? But I don't know. Maybe his taste in caucasian stank just isn't as refined as Martin Luther King, Jr.'s. You guys know how I feel about Maggie Gyllenhaal. Ellen Page could stand to be a good two feet taller than she is, but what are you gonna do?

Checkit FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World

And after the jump is a list of the top 10. How do you think FHM's list compares to the slain civil rights leader's?

The Roots - Rising Down: Album Review

Rising Down

The Roots, Rising Down (Def Jam, 2008)
The legendary Roots crew hardly need any introduction, especially to people who spend a lot of time on the Internets. Rising Down is the much anticipated follow-up to 2006's commercial (and as far as I'm concerned, artistic) disappointment, Game Theory.

Riskay "Smell Yo Dick"

This has been around since forever (I remember telling my parents about it during Christmas dinner last year), but they're just now getting around to making a video for it. Feel free to come up with your own reason for why that might be. Also, peep the racial subtext in the narrative of this clip. That may have actually been present in the song's lyrics all along, but I'll admit I wasn't really sweating the lyrics like that, aside from that chorus.

Live: New Pornographers @ The Pageant 4/19/08

New Pornographers

Never let it be said that it doesn't pay to be a little bit racist.

The other day, I was going to see the New Pr0nographers, but I had some shit I needed to take care of. I figured I might do the responsible thing and work on what I needed to get done and show up a little bit late. But then I got to thinking, "These are a couple of cracka-ass cracka groups. They'll mess around and go on right when they're supposed to."

So I didn't risk it. And wouldn't you know, opening act Okkervil River had already taken the stage by the time I walked in, at about 8:05. (Doors were at 8:00.) To think, if there had actually been traffic or some shit, I might have missed a significant portion of their set.

Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons: Album Review

When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold

Atmosphere, When Life Gives You Lemons (Rhymesayers, 2008)
It's been a minute since we've heard from Atmosphere, the legendary (amongst people who are in college) emo rap duo out of Minnesota. 2005's dismal You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having must not have been the career boon they were expecting it to be. Will this new one fare better?

You can stream the entire album right now on Atmosphere's MySpace:
