Styles P - Super Gangster: Album Review
Styles P, Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman) (Koch, 2007)
After having his career toyed with by Fiddy Cent for the past several years, Styles P is back, courtesy of the Koch graveyard aka the house that Jim Jones built. Will this album be another Hustler's P.O.M.E., or another [insert the name of the last Sheek Louch album]? Find out after the jump.
INTRO
Styles P claims to be better than everyone. Point blank period. End of story.
BLOW YA MIND
Like the single from that Cassidy album, but minus motherfucking Cassidy. Bonus!
LET'S GO
Ray J gets his Akon on here. I don't like either his singing voice or the chorus itself. Otherwise, this isn't half that bad, for what it is.
ALONE IN THE STREETS
The first song on this with no singing (save for a sped up vocal sample on the chorus) is a relief in itself.
IN IT TO WIN IT
Lame beat + lame weed carrier verse = waste of a good Styles P verse.
ALL I KNOW IS PAIN
This Alchemist track is borderline too creative for its own good. I'll still take it over the last couple of tracks in a row.
GOT MY EYES ON YOU
And here's the real Akon, to recreate some of that [whatever song Akon and Styles P did a few years ago] magic. Reminds me of "I Still Will." Is Akon over? We can only hope.
GREEN PIECE OF PAPER
Another track by the Alchemist. It's not altogether different from "All I Know Is Pain." This chorus might be simple meaning bad, as opposed to simple meaning good.
HOLIDAY
A chorus from Max B (yep, the Dipset cat) + Green Lantern's Indian music beat = weed might be a worse drug than we thought.
LOOK @ HER
Another all-around bad idea, courtesy of Green Lantern.
DA '80S
Oh shit! This cranks like some old school BDP or something. It sounds especially good in the midst of all this synth rap bullshit.
INTERLUDE 1
An hilarious skit in the vein of those old Madd Rapper skits.
SHOOT NIGGAS
Guest MC Raw Buck really ought to consider rethinking his nom de rap. Dame Grease is a bum.
SUPER GANGSTER
This beat by Vinny Idol, who's all over this, is especially obnoxious. Which is especially unfortunate, since this is the title track and all.
STAR OF THE STATE
The one with Ghostface. This beat sounds like a shitty Ruff Ryders version of "Bring the Pain," and I'd be willing to bet that's by design.
U AIN'T READY
And the one with Beanie Sigel. I'm glad they didn't cram all three of these guys on the same track like on the Ghostface album. I've gotten pretty tired of Beanie Sigel, having listened to his lame-ass new album like twice last week.
INTERLUDE 2
Another one of these hilarious interludes. Who is this guy, anyway?
GANGSTER, GANGSTER
Featuring Jadakiss and the Birthday Boy Sheek Louch, and produced by Pete Rock. This would be a no-brainer, except that this might be the most annoying Pete Rock beat ever.
CAUSE I'M BLACK
I wish Styles P was on his conscious rap steez more on this album. This track is the definition of garbage, by the way. What a waste of a Black Thought guest rap.
COMMENTS: Listening to this, you can't help but think that Styles P just opted to rap over the first 20 tracks he came across. Half of the ones by name producers aren't gonna get him on the radio anyway and are only gonna serve the purpose of annoying people who don't cop a Styles P album to hear Ray J sing. Some of the rest of these beats are just downright awful. Styles P is his old dependable self on the mic (if you notice, all of his verses pretty much sound the same), though you wish he would've kicked more of his conscious rap lyrics on this.
