According to Last Week's Poll
Not to jumpstart any '90s-style regional rap beef, but last week's poll had to do with which region in hip-hop is the best. I let this one run for two weeks because I'm getting lazy like that.
- East Coast (594 votes)
- West Coast (179 votes)
- Dirty South (149 votes)
- Midwest (95 votes)
I was surprised to see the West Coast end up in second place rather than dead last, where it belongs, but I think it's obvious people just voted for whatever region they happened to be from, because I got not much else is going right in their lives.
I mean, every once in a while I find a rap album from California that I like; but think about how huge a region that is relative to how much they actually contribute to the arts in general, let alone hip-hop. Talk about a cultural wasteland...
Similarly, I wasn't mad at the East Coast for winning, but I'd say it's hardly the powerhouse that it once was. So many of the top artists from the East Coast today are just holdovers from 10 and 15 years ago, and not very many of the younger artists are really that good.
The Midwest isn't thought of as much as a region, partly because artists from here tend to record out of New York and LA, but I'd say it was definitely slept on in this poll. I'd put the best stuff being made here up against anything coming out of New York, let alone the South and the West.
But then again I'm from here, so what do I know.
