The day the weed died

As I mentioned in my post today at XXL, rappers' weed carriers are getting shot left and right as if it's going out of style. This would seem to be a big deal, except that most of these poor bastards don't particularly add any value to hip-hop other than keeping your favorite rappers out of jail.
Think about it: Violence in hip-hop was considered a major issue back in '96-'97, when you'd only have maybe one rapper killed per year. Nowadays hardly a week goes by without news of someone getting their proverbial cap twisted back, or whatever the slang is.
The weird thing about it is that hardly any of this seems to be due to any fueds between rappers, like so many hip-hop killings back in the day; but still it'd be silly to suggest that none of this has to do with hip-hop. After all, you don't see this bullshit in any other genres of music, now do you?
My favorite part is the d-bags who go on the Internets and whine like little bitches when their favorite weed carrier gets killed, but then when someone suggests that no one gives a shit (after all, these are weed carriers we're talking about) they're the first ones talking about how they're going to kill you.
