7L & Esoteric - A New Dope: Album Review
7L & Esoteric, A New Dope (Babygrande, 2006)
As I recall, Boston crackety-cracks 7L & Esoteric had an album, or 12-inch or something (nullus), out back during the dark ages, when your father was still in college. A cursory perusal of their MySpace page reveals that this could very well be like their eighth album or something. Also, they look pretty old, but that could be because they're white.
GET DUMB
A list of things that are dumb, in rhyme form. If you listen closely, they actually make some good points about shit without getting all preachy.
EVERYWHERE
Attacking dumb motherfuckers praying to God Barney. Not as amusing as "Get Dumb," but so necessary.
FEEL THE VELVET
Another one of these lists as a song - in this case things that Esoteric likes. The chorus, with the Too Short sample, is pretty slick.
3 MINUTE CLASSIC
You guessed it, a sex rap for old guys. Nullus.
DAISYCUTTA
This one features Kool Keith on some fast rap shit. And not just some random Kool Keith verses some furriners found either - the genuine article.
ESO AIN'T SHIT
The beat on this one is almost techno-y. And I should note that this album has lots of indie-ish rock flourishes. Dudes on the Internets should love it.
DRUNKS ARE LIVE, DRUNKS ARE DEAD
A bit experimental for my tastes. Kinda Asian-sounding, in fact.
A.O.S.O.
Kinda new wave-y. Eso complains about people calling him asking for shit. Motherfuckers.
CEMETARY
The most amusing album skit I've heard in ages. Decades maybe.
REGGIE LEWIS IS WATCHING
I like storytelling songs, and this is a good one. It's got a kind of old school, Run-DMC thing going on, too.
GIRLS GONE WILD (THEN AND NOW)
About how girls these days are much sluttier than they once were. Quite possibly the truest song released all year.
THE MOST
Again kinda techno-y. Goth-ish, even. But I'm feeling this one. Nullus.
TAKE NOTE
Decent-enough, side two album filler.
PERFECT PERSON
An awesome new wave-ish song about how women try to ruin your life for their own personal amusement. Fucking bitches.
PLAY DUMB
Like "Get Dumb," but even dumber. The beat sounds like something from an NES game. And what's with the OutKast diss?
COMMENTS: This is a fantastic album. It should especially appeal to hipsters and fans of indie rock, except that I don't know that there's anything particularly ironic about white kids listening to white rappers. At any rate, you're going to want to check this one out.
