Rap albums of the year, so far
Ian (what kind of Spinal Tap-ass name is that, anyway?) wrote some shit earlier today about the best rap albums of the year, so far. Basically, his point was that the year in rap albums, up until this point, has been rather underwhelming. Of course I'm going to have to agree.
So I went and created this list of the 5 best rap albums of the year at this point. Feel free to disagree with it all you want - I hardly like any of these crap-ass albums myself. Which also brings to mind the question: What the fuck have you people who listen to hip-hop exclusively been doing all year?
In no particular order:
Slim Thug, Already Platinum - Honestly, I haven't listened to this since back when I reviewed it, but I remember it being pretty good. It almost makes up for that Mike Jones shite I had to listen to earlier in the year.
Common, Be - Can we all agree that this was a disappointment? I don't even think it belongs on this list - I just put it here because I'm sure it'll be the tall Israeli consensus rap album of the year, come January.
Teh Ghey, The Documentary - I haven't heard this one, either, since I reviewed it, which was a long, long time ago. But, as annoying as Teh Ghey is, this album's production warrants its spot on this list.
Quasimoto, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas - My choice for rap album of the year at this point and likely candidate for rap album of the year in general, unless something pretty dang good comes along between now and December 31st. Does Ghostface have anything in the works?
Sean Price, Monkey Barz - Was listening to this the other day and it kind of surprised me how good it was. It could end up one of the five best of the year in general. Who would've thunkit?
Two questions:
A) Is there anything that I'm leaving out here? If there is, it's likely because it's something I haven't heard yet. I try to at least check out all of the biggest releases, but obviously I don't get to hear everything.
and
B) Is there going to be anything worth a shit between now and the end of the year? It's hard for me to get too excited about a new Nas album at this point and that's the only really big thing I can think of, nullus homo.
